Is it safe to buy dog food at supermarkets?

I read somewhere that if you don't buy your dog food at Pet Stores or at the Vet's, chances are those sold at Supermarkets are not very healthy and contain bad preservatives. Is it better to buy good brands like Pedigree and Purina rather then cheap ones? Which ingredients or preservatives should i watch for? Which dog food is the best for my dog?
