Why did the Persian, Afghanistani and Ottoman Muslims have no problem with depicting Muhammad (respectfully)?

This is of course because Islam is not as genous as some of its adherents would want to believe. Some forms had no problem with depicting Mohammed, some did. It turns out that the ones who did won out in the end, and so we have today's situation.
